SESSION: "Disposable Caging: Overview of Performance Characteristics in Key Applications"
Category: "Facility Design, Management and Operation"

Leader(s): Jim Fallon; Moderator: Steve Sussman

This informative presentation will provide an overview of disposable caging as it relates to several key applications where these cages are being put to use today.

  • Quarantine operations: Opportunity to eliminate the need to transfer cages to a cage wash shared with a main colony. This serves as a form of risk reduction and process simplification.

  • Remote Laboratories – Anytime you have animal work that is not co-located with a cage wash it involves the arduous task of move cages to and from a wash facility. This is an expensive proposition, exposes the cages to risks during transport as well as potentially alerts animal rights groups of the location of the research.

  • BSL applications: The BMBL suggests that disposable methods be employed whenever possible in these sensitive applications. By adopting disposable caging one is able to reduce risk through significant process simplification.

  • Transportation: Whether your animals are making trips across campus or across the country, disposable cages greatly reduce cost and eliminate the need to keep track of cage inventory.

  • Mainstream husbandry: the viability of disposable cages has become so secure and reliable in recent years that they have become a popular choice for new construction and renovations, particularly when capital budgets are tight or there is a need to shorten the time it takes to bring a vivarium on-line.
These applications will be covered from a neutral perspective and will refer only to actual implementations. The information presented will be restricted to a review of data collected from users of this technology.
All sources will be available for 3rd party verification.

SEMINAR: "Disposable Caging – An Alternative to Conventional Caging"
SESSION: "Facility Design, Management and Operation"

Speakers (Seminar Topic Submission): Keith J Jenne, Marek Piechowiak, Tim Geary, Mike Parnell, Dag Eide

DISCLAIMER: Innovive understands the need for this presentation to be independent and will not participate in the seminar other than to have submitted the collection of speakers for the committee’s review. We respectfully request that this application be viewed from the perspective of bringing together multiple studies that each address some aspect of disposable caging. Given the growth of disposable caging, we believe this 3rd party data and Q&A will be of great value to AALAS attendees.
    Seminar perspectives:
  1. Ammonia and CO2 concentrations;
  2. breeding comparisons;customer case study;
  3. operational analysis with actual financials;
  4. framework for evaluating washing vs. disposables in new construction,
    based on a customer case study;.
